Australia · Subclass 189

Skilled Independent visa — permanent residence without a sponsor

The Subclass 189 is the cleanest permanent visa Australia offers: no employer, no state commitment, full work and study rights from day one, and a pathway to citizenship. It is also the hardest to be invited for, because invitations are ranked purely on points.

Realistic expectations on invitations

Subclass 189 rounds in recent programme years have been small and heavily weighted to high scorers, with most non-pro-rata occupations invited well above the 65-point floor and pro-rata occupations such as accounting and some ICT roles sitting higher still. If your score is in the 65–75 range, the honest advice is almost always to pursue Subclass 190 or 491 nomination in parallel rather than waiting on a 189 invitation that may never come.

We will tell you if your 189 prospects are weak. That conversation costs you one consultation; waiting on a hopeful EOI costs you years of age points.
